In Psychoanalytic Reflections, we are trying to understand how to navigate parenthood in today’s world. As parents, we strive to teach our children to stay rooted in the steady soil of family history and ideals, even as they travel across the shifting sands of rapidly changing times. While each generation brings changes, making gains in some areas and registering losses in others, we cannot help but ask ourselves about the present state of things: what is different, what stays the same, in the current technological age? We decided to explore these questions from a very personal vantage point. We selected topics that seemed to provide a glimpse of modern life, hoping to offer a rich and renewed way of thinking about parenting with a modern twist. These chapters offer not just insight into these particular topics, but more deeply, an overall approach to a way of thinking about our roles as the parents of young adults – an approach that encourages parents to reach out to their young adult children with open arms and steady hearts, as they step into a future that we hope they will face with courage, conviction and resilience.
